**UPDATE** I have decided on running libranet 2.8. This distro is by far the most complete I have found that runs quite efficiently on my rather old hardware. I would definitely suggest this as a possibility for anyone looking to do an install on their laptop.
I have an IBM (so sorry to hear about them losing their PC division) Thinkpad 600 that I am currently trying to get linux on. I am testing multiple distributions and finding few that are going to work for what I need. This machine is about maxed out on all fronts with a 266MHz processor and 288MB RAM and a 20GB HDD. I am going to be dual booting WIN2K and the flavor of linux that I choose.
I like anything that is Debian based because of the package management. APT is wonderful. Currently I am watching an install of libranet 2.8 and I also have a version of feather linux to try out. I ran feather linux as a live cd and it was very speedywhen I ran the included window manager. I can't recall what it was, but I will have to find out.
The biggest problem with older machines, especially laptops, is the window management. To be efficient enough to actually be productive, something needs to be able to run on extremely archaic hardware. I will let you all know how it turns out soon...
